The Chocolate Works is a stunning new development of houses and apartments by Barratt David Wilson in York.
The development is on the site of the former Terry’s chocolate factory which gives the project its name. The factory was closed in 2005 and the area was in disrepair for several years until Barratt David Wilson worked with York City Council to transform the site. Architect Studio Partington has transformed the brownfield site into a £100million development.
Chocolate Works responds to local surroundings, complementing and referencing the Grade-II listed Terrys’ building through the strategic selection of bespoke materials and brick facades.
A formal urban square at the centre of the development reflects the formality of the retained neo-classical buildings, to contrast, planting and mature trees at the site’s edges have been retained.
All homes have a private garden and terrace. They are wellproportioned with high ceilings and large windows, providing natural light and ample storage. Much of the living space has been elevated to the first-floor, leaving the majority of streets with a spacious and open perspective but with a great sense of community and heritage. However, it is the innovative use of brick and the material palette in the facades that sets Chocolate Works apart. The contrasting red multi with buff and ashlar give a modern feel but at the same time link with the traditional surroundings through texture, colour and light.
For construction, Barratt David Wilson engaged leading brickwork contractor Marlborough Brickwork Limited to construct the challenging facades. Over 30 craftsman bricklayers and 11 apprentices have worked to deliver the scheme which has achieved both quality and sales targets.
The Chocolate Works has already received over 12 prestigious awards and accolades including the York Design Awards 2017 Large Residential Winner and for best overall scheme and design at Housebuilder Awards 2016.
